It’s not a must for a fashion designer to know how to sew or join clothings together or draft pattern. But in Nigeria, for anyone thinking about going into fashion industry, learning how to sew and cut are the things that come to mind.
Although there’s nothing wrong in learning these skills. In fact having them could be of great advantage especially if you’re starting solo from scratch.
The problem is that majority of people in the fashion industry know nothing about fashion specialities. That’s why you see a tailor telling you that he’s a fashion designer.
I could remember late last year when Mai Tafo opened door for internship program, part of the tasks for admission is to explain the functions and roles of people working in a fashion house.
Many people don’t know this, I think that’s the reason why he put out the question.
Fashion has a vast range of specialties with each having its own techniques and set of skills.
Fashion designing and tailoring are two different specialties, and you can have them both.
A fashion designer conceives garment combinations of line, proportion, color, and texture.
You can be a fashion designer without knowing how to sew or make patterns.
But in this case, you must have a tailor, or pattern-maker working alongside with you. Because those two guy’s job is to turn whatever you conceive into wearable garment.
If you’re starting solo from scratch, it’s better you also learn pattern-making. This will go a long way to save you some money.
In the next post, I’m going to enlighten us on fashion specialties.
I hope this answers the question.
